ENGLISH at BROADGATE
"Hello, our names are Mrs Tyrrell and Mrs Stevenson and we are the subject leaders for English at Broadgate.
At Broadgate Primary School we believe that literacy and communication are key life skills, as well as being vital in enabling children to access every other aspect of the wider curriculum. Through our English curriculum, children will learn to develop the skills and knowledge that will enable them to communicate effectively and creatively, using both spoken and written language. Children at Broadgate Primary School will be given opportunities to enjoy and appreciate the rich variety of literature and dramatic arts, which will ensure that they are fully prepared and confident as they move to high school."

MATHS at BROADGATE
"Hello, my name is Mrs Qualtrough and I am the subject leader for Maths at Broadgate.
At Broadgate Primary School our aim is to foster a ‘number happy’ environment where maths is interesting, purposeful and enjoyable for all children. Through focused, daily maths lessons, children are encouraged to become logical thinkers, and to make links between areas of experience using a variety of methods and strategies.
The school follows the guidance of the National Curriculum for Mathematics, providing a broad-based and differentiated curriculum, tailored to the individual needs of the learners. We have a number of well-developed maths schemes, including a rigorous approach to teaching key skills through additional ‘mental maths’ sessions. We aim to make lessons enjoyable, practical and as engaging as possible, enabling children to operate confidently in a variety of independent and collaborative settings.
An awareness of the relevance of maths in the ‘real world’ is taught effectively through a variety of resources including ICT, PE and science. With the help and guidance of adults in school, children are encouraged to apply their mathematical understanding to a wide range of practical situations and are challenged (and supported) to reach the next steps of attainment."
SCIENCE at BROADGATE
"Hello, my name is Mrs Gour and I am the subject leader for Science at Broadgate.
At Broadgate Primary School we strive to provide a high-quality science education that develops children’s understanding of the world through the scientific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
In an ever-changing world, where our children’s future jobs may not even exist yet, it is vital our children understand how science has already changed their lives and how it may shape future prosperity. We seek to provide children with scientific knowledge, methodologies, and processes but also to give them the real world uses of this science.
Our children are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation through exciting investigations, which build on their natural curiosity. They are expected to:
- Try to explain what is occurring;
- Use appropriate scientific vocabulary and ideas;
- Explain the ‘why?’
We provide a range of different types of scientific enquiry throughout children’s time at Broadgate Primary and also encourage open-ended questioning, where they decide how to try to find answer. It is important children are not always directly guided to the ‘right’ answer and they realise that some of the most significant scientific advancements occurred from mistakes or someone saying ‘What if…..?’ As well as using technical terminology accurately and precisely, children will also apply their mathematical knowledge to their understanding of science, including:
- collecting,
- presenting
- and analysing data."

The visual elements, wide-ranging media and key processes are used throughout school to inform and inspire our children as artists themselves."
MUSIC at BROADGATE
"Hello, my name is Mr Tyrrell and I am the subject leader for Music at Broadgate.
At Broadgate, we believe that an understanding of and confidence in music are the two key aspects of music education. Pupils will be taught to listen attentively and with interest to an increasingly wide range of styles from different periods of history as well as the modern day. Pupils will be encouraged to appraise the music they listen to, in order to analyse its content and offer both positive opinions and constructive criticism. Pupils will be given the opportunity to play a range of tunes and untuned instruments, as well as using their voices, and guided in using these means to compose their own pieces of music. Within composition, pupils will be encouraged to improvise certain parts based on a particular style.
At Broadgate, we strongly encourage the use of music across the curriculum. It could be a times table song in maths, a medieval folk song in history or some lyrical analysis in English; we aim to show our children the important role that music has played and continues to play in society."
Extra-curricular music also plays an important role in our school. We currently offer woodwind (flute) tuition in Years 3 and 4, as well as ukulele tuition in Year 6. All children take part in bi-weekly singing assemblies led by myself, in which they access a range of different musical styles.
COMPUTING at BROADGATE
"Hello, my name is Mr Massheder and I am the subject leader for Computing at Broadgate.
At Broadgate Primary School we recognise that pupils are living in a rapidly changing world, in which ICT is playing an ever-increasing role. We aim, therefore, to equip children with the skills to adapt to new technology and to give them confidence to use ICT to further their learning and assist them in everyday life. In doing so, all pupils will have access to ICT equipment and resources, according to their ability and age range.
At Broadgate Primary School we believe that increased ICT skills promote independent learning and gives greater access to a wide range of ideas and experiences. It enhances the quality of children’s work across the curriculum and should enhance and enrich the learning process."
GEOGRAPHY at BROADGATE
"Hello, my name is Miss Piercy and I am the subject leader for Geography at Broadgate.

At Broadgate Primary School, Geography is a valued part of the curriculum as it provides a means of exploring, appreciating and understanding the world in which we live and how it has evolved. Geography explores the relationship between the Earth and its people."

At Broadgate Primary School we aim to stimulate children’s interest and understanding about the life of people who lived in the past and ways in which it differs from the present. We believe that learning about the past helps children to make sense of the world in which they live and to develop analytical thinking.
At Broadgate Primary School we believe that the study of History makes a valuable contribution to the children’s understanding of all aspects of life giving a sense of identity and heritage."
MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES (FRENCH) at BROADGATE
"Hello, my name is Mrs Karvounidou. I am the subject leader for Modern Foreign Languages at Broadgate.
At Broadgate Primary School we teach French to all KS2 children as part of the normal school curriculum. We believe that many children enjoy learning to speak another language and that the earlier a child is exposed to a foreign language, the faster the language in question is acquired.
At Broadgate Primary School we also believe that it is beneficial to introduce a new language to children when they are at primary school, as they tend to be less self-conscious about speaking aloud at this stage of their development. It is widely believed that the early acquisition of a foreign language facilitates the learning of other foreign languages later in life.
Language also lies at the heart of ideas about individual identity and community and learning another language can do a great deal to shape children’s ideas in this critical area as well as giving them a new perspective on their own language."
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY at BROADGATE
"Hello, my name is Mr Donnison and I am the Design and Technology leader at Broadgate.

Creative thinking encourages children to make positive changes to their quality of life. The subject encourages children to become autonomous and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. It enables them to identify needs and opportunities and to respond by developing ideas and eventually making products and systems."
PHYSICAL EDUCATION at BROADGATE
"Hello, my name is Mr Hoyle. I am the PE Leader at Broadgate Primary School.
At Broadgate Primary School, we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment is a unique and vital contributor to a child’s physical development and well-being. A broad and balanced physical education curriculum is intended to provide for children’s increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations.
At Broadgate we believe Physical Education should be an area of learning where self-esteem, physical progression and positive attitudes are fostered and nurtured. Physical Education provides all children with the opportunity to succeed, whether through personal or team success. Physical Education also promotes a healthy lifestyle which children can develop and value into adulthood."
