Broadgate Primary School

This autumn, our History topic will be The Stone Age. The children will explore the limited evidence available to historians today and discover how Stone Age people lived. They will learn about the materials used to build homes and gain an understanding of how people's lives changed over this period of history. While History will be our main focus, the topic will also incorporate Art and English, culminating in the creation of a historical narrative about travelling back to the Stone Age. Later in the year, we will revisit historical comparisons when studying the Tudor period.

In Science, we will study Teeth and Digestion. Children will learn about the journey food takes through the body, the functions of different types of teeth, and the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene to keep their teeth healthy.

Our class reading texts this term will be:

• The Stolen Spear by Saviour Pirotta
• The Diary of a Killer Cat by Anne Fine

We will also read Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura, which will inspire the children's own historical narrative writing.

In Geography, we will be learning about mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes, building on the knowledge gained during the Autumn Term. Children will investigate how these natural features are formed, where they can be found around the world, and how they impact the lives of people living nearby. We will also learn about Italy, exploring its location in Europe, major cities, physical features and famous landmarks. Children will discover how Italy's geography has been shaped by volcanoes such as Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna. Aspects of non-fiction writing will be incorporated into this topic, allowing children to develop their research and report-writing skills.

In English, we will complete a mini-topic based on the works of Roald Dahl. Texts will include Fantastic Mr Fox, Revolting Rhymes, The Twits, Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Children will write a range of text types, including non-chronological reports, poetry, character descriptions and narratives. They will also have the opportunity to create their very own Revolting Rhyme inspired by Dahl's unique style.

In Science, we will be learning about Electricity and Sound. Children will investigate how electrical circuits work, identify common conductors and insulators, and explore how electricity is used safely in everyday life. They will also learn about how sounds are made, how vibrations travel, and how pitch and volume can change.

Our History topic this term is The Tudors and the impact they had on society. Children will undertake research into the rise of the Tudor dynasty, explore the achievements of famous explorers from this period, and investigate the lives and reigns of the Tudor monarchs. Although the main focus of this topic is History, it will also incorporate opportunities to develop Art and English skills through a range of creative and research-based activities.

In Science, we will be learning about States of Matter and Living Things and Their Habitats. Children will investigate the properties of solids, liquids and gases and explore how materials can change state through processes such as melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation. They will also learn about the water cycle and observe how temperature affects these changes. As part of their work on Living Things and Their Habitats, children will classify living things in a variety of ways, explore different habitats and understand how environments can change and affect the organisms that live within them.

We will conclude our weekly swimming lessons and assess the children's water confidence, swimming ability and progress throughout the year.
