Introduction: The Broadgate Learning Platform

Teaching Tools and Lesson Resources

  • The Learning Platform allows teachers to upload resources for pupils to engage with in a variety of ways: embedded videos; weblinks; photographs and slide presentations. This enables teachers to make use of a wide range of online material to provide pupils with excellent quality lesson introductions and stimuli: video content from White Rose Maths; Oxford Owl e-books; Oak National Academy Classroom and Virtual Library as well as a range of other Government-backed providers.
  • A variety of options are available for pupils to complete tasks, without the need for expensive third-party software, as the Learning Platform has a range of inbuilt tools such as its own word processing and graphics software, the facility to make sound and video recordings as well as allowing pupils to contribute ideas through the use of blogs and forums. As pupils are already familiar with the Learning Platform and these online tools, they have the necessary skills to engage with online tasks set by teachers.
  • The Learning Platform has its own Learning Library, which pupils can use to choose their own activities, as well as completing those set by the teacher. This can be accessed from their homepage by clicking on the ‘Activities’ button.
  • The school also has an online subscription to Espresso (by Discovery Education), which provides multimedia lesson content organised in Key Stages and Subjects.

Differentiation and Personalised Learning

  • When teachers set a task, the Learning Platform prompts the teacher to select which pupils the task will be set for. This provides teachers with the opportunity to provide personalised learning to individual pupils, based on recent assessment data, special educational needs or the particular interests of pupils.

Self-Assessment/Marking and Feedback

  • It is important that pupils have the opportunity to engage in self-assessment, so on completion of some tasks, especially core subjects, they will be encouraged to respond to a prompt which asks them to assess their level of confidence with regard to the completed task.
  • Teachers will always mark Maths and English tasks but the way this will be done, very much depends on the type of task set.
  • Various options are available to teachers in terms of marking: numerical e.g. marks out of ten; traffic light colours; smiley faces etc.
  • Teachers also have the option to leave a comment about the work. This ensures that feedback is relevant and personalised, with appropriate next steps given whenever necessary.
  • A ‘Mark Book’ of completed tasks and marking/feedback given will be saved by the teacher for the purposes of assessment and record keeping. The tasks themselves will have been saved to pupils’ own ‘My Work’ folders.

Rewards

  • It is extremely important to us that pupils continue to experience motivational incentives through a praise and rewards system, over and above marking and feedback.
  • In School, house points are our primary reward. On the Learning Platform, pupils will be given a range of rewards, which are worth different numbers of points. Each of the rewards is made to look like a sticker and they have a variety of messages e.g. Great Maths Work! The teacher can also leave an extra message with details of why the reward has been given.
  • Once allocated, the rewards are automatically added to the community of which the pupil is a member, and a ‘Leader Board’ is created.
  • Pupils are alerted to the fact that they have been rewarded by a small bell symbol on their homepage, which moves from side to side,  as if it is being rung. They can then access their own ‘My Rewards’ area and look at the Leader Board to see how they are doing.

Barriers to Accessing Remote Learning

  • If your child does not have access to a suitable device, which will enable them to engage with remote learning, please contact the school office.
    • Telephone: 0113 2582685
    • Email: office@broadgateprimary.org.uk
  • We have a small number of devices that we are able to loan families, on completion of a loan agreement.
  • In the event of no devices being available we will provide paper copies of work that closely matches what pupils are completing online.  Photographs of completed work can then be emailed to staff or work returned to school for feedback (via a catch-up phone call).

Years 1-6 Remote Learning - Individual Pupils Self-isolating

  • In the event of individual pupils having to self-isolate, work will be uploaded the day after teachers receive notification of the isolation.
  • Work set for any pupils who are self-isolating will usually follow the normal school curriculum so that individuals are able to keep up with the rest of the class.
  • In order to provide effective lessons and thereby maximise progress, some of the work will need to be adapted for online access.
  • Online tasks, completed by individual pupils who are self-isolating, will be marked and queries answered at the end of the school day (after 3.15).

Years 1-6 Remote Learning - A Collapsed Bubble

  • In the event of a collapsed bubble, in which a full year group must self-isolate, work for pupils will be uploaded to the Learning Platform the day after the bubble collapses.
  • Each day, teachers will set KS1 pupils 3 hours of school work and KS2 pupils 4 hours of school work, as follows:
    • An English reading task – phonics for younger children, reading practice or comprehension
    • An English writing task – handwriting, SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) or creative writing (fiction/non-fiction based work)
    • A Mathematics task
    • A Topic task e.g. Science, Geography, Art, History, Music, Computing, French, R.E.
  • Once a week, teachers will set pupils a physical activity challenge – these will often include a video by our P.E. leader, Mr Hoyle.
  • Teachers will also regularly provide activities that seek to nurture the well-being and positive mental health of their pupils.
  • Tasks will be set and marked on a daily basis and will remain 'live' until the following morning, when the teacher will close them and upload the new tasks for the day.
  • Wherever possible and appropriate, the same curriculum will be taught remotely as it is in school.  However, it may be necessary to make adaptations in some subjects, for example where pupils would be taking part in practical activities in Science.
  • Pupils are expected to complete each day's tasks, ideally following the normal pattern of the school day, where possible, with Maths and English being done in the morning and other subjects in the afternoon.
  • Parents/Carers may need to support their children to access the Learning Platform and ensure that children understand what they are required to do each day.
  • Each morning, parents/carers should encourage their children to log into the Learning Platform and access their email content, as teachers will record a daily audio message for pupils, outlining the work set for the day, including any special messages or instructions.
  • Throughout the day, as pupils begin and continue to access the learning provided by teachers, there will inevitably be questions and support required. Pupils should email teachers using ‘Safemail’, which is the Platform’s own email tool. Parents/Carers are also welcome to contact teachers with their own questions or on behalf of their children.  There will always be a teacher ready to respond.
  • Please be aware that any work or query submitted after 4.30pm will be responded to on the next working day.

Years 1-6 Remote Learning - National Lockdown

  • In the event of a national lockdown, work for pupils will be uploaded to the Learning Platform the day after schools have closed.
  • Each morning, parents/carers should encourage their children to log into the Learning Platform and access their email content, as teachers will record a daily audio message for pupils, outlining the work set for the day and any appropriate messages e.g. praising good work from the previous day and reminding pupils about key dates coming up e.g. class Zoom meetings etc.
  • In order to provide both in-school and remote learning throughout any period of Lockdown, parallel class teachers will be on a rota with one staff member responsible for teaching children of keyworkers in school and the other responsible for that day’s remote learning. For pupils in two-form entry cohorts, the daily audio message will explain which teacher is ‘on duty’ to support home learning that day so pupils know who to direct any questions to.
  • Please be aware that any work or query submitted after 4.30pm will be responded to the next working day.
  • As we are all aware, a prolonged period of National Lockdown is a challenging time and we understand the need for pupils to have some face-to-face communication with their teachers and friends on a regular basis. With this in mind, every teacher will arrange a weekly Zoom session with their own class.
  • Teachers will send details of these timetabled Zoom sessions alongside the relevant meeting IDs and passcodes to all parents/carers via Ping.
  • Please note that children should have an adult in the room with them, at all times, whilst on a Zoom call.
  • During a full Lockdown, families may find themselves in very different situations, and it might not be possible for all children to attend the Zoom sessions each week. If your child is not able to attend the designated Zoom sessions regularly, teachers will follow-up with a phone-call to allow each child to have personalised interaction.

Introduction: Tapestry - Early Years Foundation Stage

  • Tapestry builds a very special record of a child’s experiences, development and learning journey through their early years and primary education. Using photos, videos and diary entries, a teacher or early years practitioner, along with the child’s parents/carers, ‘weaves’ the story of the child and how they are growing and developing.
  • As with the Learning Platform, Tapestry allows teachers to upload resources for pupils to engage with in a variety of ways: embedded videos; weblinks; photographs and slide presentations. This enables teachers to make use of a wide range of online material to provide pupils with excellent quality lesson introductions and stimuli: video content from White Rose Maths; Oxford Owl e-books; Oak National Academy Classroom and Virtual Library as well as a range of other Government-backed providers.
  • The Learning Platform will be used alongside Tapestry to offer activities to develop computing skills. The children will also be able to view their tasks and rewards once logged onto their home page. They will be able to look at the Leader Board to see how they are doing.

EYFS Remote Learning - Individual Pupils Self-isolating

  • In the event of individual pupils having to self-isolate, work will be uploaded the day after teachers receive notification of the isolation.
  • Work set for any pupils who are self-isolating will usually follow the normal school curriculum so that individuals are able to keep up with the rest of the class.
  • In order to provide effective lessons and thereby maximise progress, some of the work will need to be adapted for online access.
  • Online tasks, completed by individual pupils who are self-isolating, will be marked and queries answered at the end of the school day (after 3.15).

EYFS Remote Learning - A Collapsed Bubble

  • In the event of a collapsed bubble, in which a full year group must self-isolate, work for pupils in EYFS will be uploaded to Tapestry the day after the bubble collapses.
  • Parents/Carers should log onto Tapestry each day to view the resources and activities provided.
    • Nursery will upload a daily challenge.
  • In Reception children will be set
    • Daily reading with hints and tips of different ways to practise learning key words
    • A phonics lesson/literacy task. This will include a teaching video from Read Write Inc for phonics
    • A writing task
    • A Mathematics task
    • A Topic task
  • Once a week, teachers will set pupils a physical activity challenge – these will often include a video by our P.E. leader, Mr Hoyle.
  • Teachers will also regularly provide activities that seek to nurture the well-being and positive mental health of their pupils.
  • Tasks will be set and marked on a daily basis and but will remain 'live' for the rest of the week, when the teacher will close them.
  • Throughout the day, as pupils begin and continue to access the learning provided by teachers, there will inevitably be questions and support required. Parents/Carers should message teachers via Tapestry. There will always be a teacher ready to respond.
  • Examples of children’s home learning should be shared with teachers daily via Tapestry in one daily observation. Teachers will comment on work uploaded and give feedback where appropriate.
  • Please be aware that any work or query submitted after 4.30pm will be responded to on the next working day.
  • The activities set are designed for pupils to access at their own level with notes to parents/carers about the range of expectations. Differentiation will be through outcome and specific teacher feedback where needed.
  • Each day Nursery and Reception teachers will send a voice memo to their class.
  • Pupils will also receive rewards through the school's Learning Platform, as detailed in the 'Rewards' section above.

EYFS Remote Learning - A National Lockdown

  • In the event of a National Lockdown, work for pupils will be uploaded to Tapestry the day after schools have closed.
  • The pattern of daily learning will be as outlined above.
  • As we are all aware, a prolonged period of National Lockdown is a challenging time and we understand the need for pupils to have some face-to-face communication with their teachers and friends on a regular basis. With this in mind, every teacher will arrange a weekly Zoom session with their own class.
